The Most Popular Video Game Types
There are so many types of video games out there, that it can be very confusing when you are trying to figure out which ones you actually want to buy. Believe it or not, there are many hidden gems that people have missed because they didn't know that the game they were playing had a certain type of playability, or that it had certain features that they enjoyed. You don't need to get too caught up in the game classification and what each game actually is, but rather, what your personal preference is. This article will talk about the different types of video games out there, and hopefully help clear things up!
The first thing I would like to discuss are video games that fall under the different types of genres. There are actually many different types of video games available, and usually, they are classified by their overall purpose or feature not by the actual type of gameplay that they contain. Some examples of these general game genres are Action/Adventure, Card/Cardfight, arcade, Casual, Cycling, Driving/Racing, Fishing, Lighthearted, Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games (MMORPG), Sports, Trivia, World of Warcraft, Zombie and Universal Horror Games. These are just a few of the many different types of video games that exist! Obviously, there are going to be some overlap in each genre, but these are certainly the biggest and most well known!
When it comes to action games and adventure games, there are three distinct sub-genres of this genre. The first one is racing. Obviously, any video game with racing elements is considered an action game. However, there are so many different types of racing games that it is impossible to list them all in one article! Let's start with something simple; drifting.
Rushing through an action-adventure game to complete all the quests and to earn the highest score possible without much exploration would probably fall into this action game genre. Typically, a player will spend a great deal of time in combat. Whether the combat occurs within the game world or is non-interactive, it is an essential part of the video game genre. Usually, a player will have a variety of weapons at their disposal and must use them wisely to fight against a constantly advancing variety of opponents.
Mystery and suspense are also extremely popular in this sub-genre. Most mystery video game titles require the player to piece together a plot, sometimes using special items or unlockable secrets to do so. The main character, usually a detective, will typically solve puzzles to reach the needed information or will go around looking for clues while engaging in a lot of combat. Suspense video games often have a very small plot or limited amount of content that is meant to build up tension until a crucial point in the story is reached. For example, a girl is found dead in the woods, with her killer still at large, the player must use all of their knowledge and resources to solve the crime before they are able to return to the real world.
Racing games have been one of the most successful genres in video gaming history. They began in the arcade days, when simple, two-dimensional games were designed to compete against each other on speed. As the genre grew, more complex, three-dimensional games began to be produced. Although it lost some of its initial popularity when consoles like the Nintendo Gamecube took over the competitive market, racing games are now among the most popular interactive genre, selling over nine million copies each year. Of course, the best-selling release in this sub-genre is probably Sonic and SEGA, as every fan of these classic Sega Genesis games can't get enough Sonic the Hedgehog and Tails!
Turn-based strategy games are also highly popular. The real difference with a turn-based strategy game and an action or adventure game is that you cannot move around your character during the game. Instead, you must wait until a turn is nearly complete to make a decision. The benefit of these types of games is that they offer a great deal of depth and detail, which can only come with years of development and thousands of hours of play testing.
Another sub-genre that hasn't gained the popularity of other sub-genres is the simulation genre. These games typically feature single-player gameplay, though there are some multiplayer options as well. They are designed around realistic situations, with the goal being to successfully complete the game and achieve a set goal. Some of the more popular simulation games include Microsoft Flight Simulator, Quest and Sims Medieval.
